Swim Lessons - Parent/Child (6m-36m)
Accompanied by a parent*, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.
Children are required to wear a swim diaper if they aren’t fully potty trained.
Stage Descriptions:
A / Water Discovery
Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment.
B / Water Exploration
Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
*We define parent broadly to include all adults with primary Skill Assessments responsibility for raising children, including biological parents, adoptive parents, guardians, stepparents, grandparents, or any other type of parenting relationship.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE. At the Y, no one is denied service due to the inability to pay. Funds for Financial Assistance are provided through the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign. Learn more here!

Stage B Water Exploration
In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.
Prerequisites: blow bubbles on the surface with assistance, front tow with chin in water, kicking and assistance, back tow with head on parent’s shoulder and kicking, back float with head on parent’s shoulder, roll front to back and back to front with assistance, front float with chin in water and assistance, can follow commands on when to enter and exit the water, can crawl along the wall with minimal assistance.
The ratio for this class is typically 8 parent/child pairs to one instructor.
Swimming Skills Developed:
- Blowing bubbles mouth & nose submerged, assisted
- Front tow, assisted
- Water exit, assisted
- Water entry, assisted
- Back float, assisted
- Roll, assisted back to front & front to back
- Front float, assisted
- Wall grab, assisted on edge, 5ft
