The YMCA offers a variety of certifications in First Aid, CPR, aquatics, babysitting, rock climbing, and more.


FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE. At the Y, no one is denied service due to the inability to pay. Funds for Financial Assistance are provided through the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign. Learn more here! 

If you are pre-qualified for Financial Assistance, please note that some of our programs have minimum fees in order to cover costs of materials and supplies. This fee may be higher depending on your amount of assistance.

Belay Certifications

The belay certification teaches each participant how to safely control the ropes for their partner, how to tie safe climbing knots, and communication commands. Upon completion the participant will be able to belay during certified climbing time at the RockWall.

Participants must be 14 years or older.

Child and Babysitting Safety

This one-day course offers a Child & Babysitting Safety (CABS) certification and CPR/AED certification. Participants will learn how to choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games, prevent injuries, be prepared if an emergency happens in their care, handle bed time issues, and more!

This class has an e-learning component to be completed before the in-person class date. Two separate e-learning links from HSI.com, one for CABS and one for CPR/AED, will be emailed to you 10-14 days prior to the in-person class date. Please plan for the e-learning work to take up to 7hrs.

In-person class: 10am-3:30pm (Child and Babysitting content during morning, a short lunch break, then CPR/AED content in afternoon)

YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant

This course is designed to train and certify individuals in the knowledge and skills necessary to help prevent and recognize aquatic risks to assist and alert a lifeguard in the emergency response to an accident or injury. Participants will also be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) course: Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid for the Community, and Emergency Oxygen Administration upon successful completion of this course. This course does not provide participants with lifeguard certification & training.

This course will include up to 8 hours of e-learning that needs to be completed before the start date of the class, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions. The classroom portions will take place at our Metro building (805 West Franklin).

To complete this class you must be able to complete the following prerequisites:

Phase 1:

  • Tread water for 2 minutes with no hands
  • Swim 100 yards of front crawl

Phase 2:

Participants will start in the water at the shallow end and perform the following:

  • Sprint for approximately 60 feet and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 4 to 6 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility)
  • Pick up an object (diving ring) from the bottom of the pool, surface, and tread water for at least 1 minute with legs only, then replace the object back on the bottom of the pool where it was found.
  • Surface and swim the remaining length to the end of the pool and hoist yourself out of the water without using a ladder or other assistance.
  • Immediate begin compressions on an adult manikin for 1 minute or 100 compressions, stand listen to instructions from instructor.

YMCA Lifeguard

The YMCA Lifeguard V7 course with Waterfront and Waterpark is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer at a pool, lake, river, surf and waterpark environments. Participants will be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (HSI) courses: Basic Life Support (BLS), Adult First Aid, Pediatric First Aid, and Emergency use of Medical Oxygen.
The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problem before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary.
The course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, open water dangers, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. Students must pass the physical skills test prior to the class and must be 16 years of age by the last day of the scheduled class.

This course will include up to 8 hours of e-learning that needs to be completed before the start date of the class, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions. The classroom portions will take place at our Metro building (805 West Franklin).

To complete this class you must be able to complete the following prerequisites:

  • Phase 1 – Continuous Swim: 550 yards (swim goggles are allowed)
    • Swim 200 yards of front crawl
    • Swim 200 yards of breaststroke
    • Swim 50 yards of front crawl with head up
    • Swim 50 yards of breaststroke with head up
    • Swim 50 yards of elementary backstroke kick or eggbeater kick with hands on chest
  • Phase 2 – Tread Water
    • Tread Water for two minutes (no arms) without stopping or resting
  • Phase 3 – Underwater Swim Event
    • Starting in the water perform a feet first surface dive in 7-10 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility). Then swims underwater for 15 feet
  • Phase 4: Combined Skills Event (no goggles may be used)
    • Participants start in the water at one end of the pool
    • Sprint for approximately 60 feet (20 yards) and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 7 to 10 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility) Pick up an object (dive ring) from the bottom of pool, surface, hold the object with both hands, and tread water for at least one minute using your legs only
    • Swim the remaining length of the pool on your back, holding the object with both hands; place the object on the deck and hoist yourself out of water
    • Immediately begin compressions on an adult mannequin for one minute or 100 compressions
    • Quickly walk to an elevated lifeguard stand, climb into stand, sit down; scan and recognize objects on pool deck

YMCA Lifeguard

Course is designed to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be certified in Basic Life Support, Adult First Aid, Pediatric First Aid, and Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen. The leadership competencies this course meets for the Leader Level are: Inclusion, Influence, Communication, Decision Making, and Emotional Maturity.

This course will include up to 8 hours of e-learning that needs to be completed before the start date of the class, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions. Please make sure the participant’s email is on the account at the time of registration.

To complete this class you must be able to complete the following prerequisites:

Phase 1:

  • Tread water for 2 minutes with no hands
  • Swim 100 yards of front crawl

Phase 2:

Swim 50 yards of each of the following:

  • Front crawl with the head up
  • Sidestroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Breaststroke with the head up
  • Elementary backstroke kick (breaststroke kick on the back) with hands on the chest
  • Perform a feet first surface time in 8 to 10 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility), then swim underwater for 15 feet

Phase 3:

Participants will start in the water at the shallow end and perform the following:

  • Sprint for approximately 60 feet and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 8 to 10 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility)
  • Pick up an object (diving ring) from the bottom of the pool, surface, and tread water for at least 1 minute with legs only, then replace the object back on the bottom of the pool where it was found.
  • Surface and swim the remaining length to the end of the pool and hoist yourself out of the water without using a ladder or other assistance.
  • Immediate begin compressions on an adult manikin for 1 minute or 100 compressions, stand listen to instructions from instructor.

YMCA Lifeguard

The YMCA Lifeguard V7 course with Waterfront and Waterpark is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer at a pool, lake, river, surf and waterpark environments. Participants will be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (HSI) courses: Basic Life Support (BLS), Adult First Aid, Pediatric First Aid, and Emergency use of Medical Oxygen.
The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problem before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary.
The course covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, legal responsibilities, pool maintenance basics, open water dangers, and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. Students must be 16 years of age by the last day of the scheduled class.

This course will include up to 8 hours of e-learning that needs to be completed before the start date of the class, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions.

To complete this class you must be able to complete the following physical competency test on the first day of class:

  • Phase 1 – Continuous Swim: 550 yards (swim goggles are allowed)
    • Swim 200 yards of front crawl
    • Swim 200 yards of breaststroke
    • Swim 50 yards of front crawl with head up
    • Swim 50 yards of breaststroke with head up
    • Swim 50 yards of elementary backstroke kick or eggbeater kick with hands on chest
  • Phase 2 – Tread Water
    • Tread Water for two minutes (no arms) without stopping or resting
  • Phase 3 – Underwater Swim Event
    • Starting in the water perform a feet first surface dive in 13 feet of water (maximum depth of training facility). Then swims underwater for 15 feet
  • Phase 4: Combined Skills Event (no goggles may be used)
    • Participants start in the water at one end of the pool
    • Sprint for approximately 60 feet (20 yards) and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 13 feet of water (maximum depth of training facility) Pick up an object (dive ring) from the bottom of pool, surface, hold the object with both hands, and tread water for at least one minute using your legs only
    • Swim the remaining length of the pool on your back, holding the object with both hands; place the object on the deck and hoist yourself out of water
    • Immediately begin compressions on an adult mannequin for one minute or 100 compressions
    • Quickly walk to an elevated lifeguard stand, climb into stand, sit down; scan and recognize objects on pool deck

This course trains instructor candidates to teach YMCA Swim Lessons.  It also provides certification in CPR, AED, First-Aid and oxygen administration. Attendance is mandatory at all sessions for certification. There will be some e-learning that must be completed before the first day of the class, it can take up to 5 hours to complete, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions. The classroom portions will take place at our Metro building (805 West Franklin).
