The YMCA offers a variety of certifications in First Aid, CPR, aquatics, babysitting, rock climbing, and more.


FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE. At the Y, no one is denied service due to the inability to pay. Funds for Financial Assistance are provided through the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign. Learn more here! 

If you are pre-qualified for Financial Assistance, please note that some of our programs have minimum fees in order to cover costs of materials and supplies. This fee may be higher depending on your amount of assistance.

Belay Certifications

Caldwell YMCA

The belay certification teaches each participant how to safely control the ropes for their partner, how to tie safe climbing knots, and communication commands. Upon completion the participant will be able to belay during certified climbing time at the RockWall.

Participants must be 14 years or older.

Belay Certifications

Child and Babysitting Safety

This one-day course offers a Child & Babysitting Safety (CABS) certification and CPR/AED certification. Participants will learn how to choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games, prevent injuries, be prepared if an emergency happens in their care, handle bed time issues, and more!

This class has an e-learning component to be completed before the in-person class date. Two separate e-learning links from HSI.com, one for CABS and one for CPR/AED, will be emailed to you 10-14 days prior to the in-person class date. Please plan for the e-learning work to take up to 7hrs.

In-person class: 10am-3:30pm (Child and Babysitting content during morning, a short lunch break, then CPR/AED content in afternoon)

Participants will also be certified in American Safety and Health Institute’s (ASHI) course: Basic Life Support, Basic First Aid for the Community, and Emergency Oxygen Administration upon successful completion of this course. This course does not provide participants with lifeguard certification & training.

This course will include up to 8 hours of e-learning that needs to be completed before the start date of the class, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions. The classroom portions will take place at our Metro building (805 West Franklin).

To complete this class you must be able to complete the following prerequisites:

Phase 1:

  • Tread water for 2 minutes with no hands
  • Swim 100 yards of front crawl

Phase 2:

Participants will start in the water at the shallow end and perform the following:

  • Sprint for approximately 60 feet and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 4 to 6 feet of water (or maximum depth of training facility)
  • Pick up an object (diving ring) from the bottom of the pool, surface, and tread water for at least 1 minute with legs only, then replace the object back on the bottom of the pool where it was found.
  • Surface and swim the remaining length to the end of the pool and hoist yourself out of the water without using a ladder or other assistance.
  • Immediate begin compressions on an adult manikin for 1 minute or 100 compressions, stand listen to instructions from instructor.

  • Pick up an object (diving ring) from the bottom of the pool, surface, and tread water for at least 1 minute with legs only, then replace the object back on the bottom of the pool where it was found.
  • Surface and swim the remaining length to the end of the pool and hoist yourself out of the water without using a ladder or other assistance.
  • Immediate begin compressions on an adult manikin for 1 minute or 100 compressions, stand listen to instructions from instructor.

This course trains instructor candidates to teach YMCA Swim Lessons.  It also provides certification in CPR, AED, First-Aid and oxygen administration. Attendance is mandatory at all sessions for certification. There will be some e-learning that must be completed before the first day of the class, it can take up to 5 hours to complete, and will also consist of pool and classroom portions. The classroom portions will take place at our Metro building (805 West Franklin).

All participants must be able to swim the following strokes:

  • Front Crawl
  • Back Crawl
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Side Stroke
  • Elementary Backstroke
  • 2 minutes treading water
  • March class – 3/27-3/29-30 – Wed (4pm-8pm), Sat/Sun (9am-5pm)
